Tell Denver's City Council to Listen to the People:

No Zoning Change without Equitable Conditions in Swansea!

April 2nd, 2019

Dear friends, neighbors, and advocates of housing justice,

Next Monday, April 8th, Denver’s City Council will hold a final public hearing on the zoning change for 2535 E. 40th Ave. This zoning change has been conducted without meaningful engagement from neighbors and community groups, and sets a dangerous precedent of not involving neighbors, and not doing an additional development process in neighborhoods that are most vulnerable to involuntary displacement. The proposal from the developer of 2535 E. 40th Ave includes adding more than 700 housing units, a number that would increase the number of overall households in Swansea by nearly 50%. Of these 700 units, nearly 90% of them will be priced at market rate, further increasing the threat of involuntary displacement and negative health outcomes for a majority of households in Elyria-Swansea. Please join hundreds of neighbors in Elyria-Swansea in telling Denver’s City Council to listen to the People-- No zoning change without equitable conditions in Swansea!

Neighbors in Elyria-Swansea have put out a call to action today to contact your City Councilperson and let them know that approving such a large development without an additional planning process, without meaningful community participation, and without additional equitable conditions threatens to continue nearly a century of racial and economic discrimination in Elyria-Swansea.

Action Points:

  • Call your representative in Denver's City Council-- include equitable conditions as part of zoning change

  • Share the information that is happening with your neighbors and on Facebook

  • Give testimony at City Council, Monday, April 8th (5-8pm)
